What is an extension of stay?

• A foreign resident who wishes to stay in Korea for longer than the period of stay granted must obtain permission for an extension of stay.

Application period for permission for an extension of stay

• A foreign resident who wishes to apply for an extension of stay must do so in the period starting from 4 months before the expiration date of his or her stay to the day of expiration.
• A foreign resident who applies for an extension of stay after the expiration of his or her stay period must pay a penalty fee. (Article 25 of the Immigration Control Law)

Procedures for applying for permission for an extension of stay

• A foreign resident may apply in person or an agent representing the foreign resident may apply on his or her behalf at the Korea Immigration Service office by submitting the required documents. (See the list of documents required for each type of stay.)
