Aug. 13, 1949 Seongbuk Gu parted away from Dongdaemun Gu under Executive Order No. 159 (proclaimed on Aug. 13, 1948)
Apr. 18, 1955 The administrative unit of ‘Dong’ adopted under Municipal Ordinance No. 66 (21 ‘Dongs’ were created.
Jan. 1, 1963 Myeonmok-dong of SeongDong Gu acquired under Law No. 1172 (proclaimed on Nov. 21, 2962); part of Guri Myeon, Yangju, Gyeonggi Do also acquired, necessitating the establishment of Mang-u Branch (24-dongs in total).
Jan. 1, 1968 Municipal Ordinance No. 491 (proclaimed on Dec. 29, 1967) eliminated Mang-u Branch.
May 18, 1970 Municipal Ordinance No. 614 (proclaimed on May 5, 1970) changed the minimum quorum of ‘Dong’ heads and ‘Dong’ jurisdictions (28-dongs to 34-dongs in total).
Jul. 1, 1973 Part of Myeonmok-dong of Dongdaemun Gu acquired by SeongDong Gu, and part of Junggok-dong of SeongDong Gu acquired by Dongdaemun Gu under Executive Order No. 6548 (proclaimed on Mar. 12, 1973); Municipal Ordinance No. 784 (proclaimed on Jun. 26, 1973) created Myeonmok-3-dong and Myeonmok-4-dong (34-dongs to 36-dongs).
Oct. 1, 1975 The old ‘Gu’ jurisdiction changed under Executive Order No. 7816 (proclaimed on Sep. 23, 1975).
  • Changsin-dong, Sung-in-dong, and part of Sinseol-dong of Dongdaemun Gu were transferred to Jongno Gu.
  • Parts of Myeonmok-dong, Yongdu-dong, and Dapsimni-dong were transferred to Seongdong Gu.
  • Bomun-dong 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-ga and part of Sinseol-dong of Dongdaemun Gu were transferred to Seongbuk Gu.
  • Parts of Junggok-dong, Neung-dong, and Gunja-dong of Seongdong Gu were transferred to Dongdaemun Gu.
  • Anam-dong 4- and 5-ga, and part of Seokgwan-dong of Seongbuk Gu were transferred to Dongdaemun Gu; Municipal Ordinance No. 979 (proclaimed on Sep. 29, 1975) determined the names and areas of each-dong.
  • Parts of Junggok-dong, Neung-dong, and Gunja-dong were integrated to form Jang-an-dong.
  • Parts of Jong-am-dong and Anam-dong 5-ga were transferred to Jegi-dong.
  • Part of Jong-am-dong turned into Cheongnyangni-dong.
  • Parts of Anam-dong 4- and 5-ga transferred to Yongdu-dong.
  • Part of Seokgwan-dong transferred to Imun-dong.
  • Part of Bomun-dong 7-ga transferred to Sinseol-dong; Municipal Ordinance No. 981 determined the minimal quorum of-dong heads,-dong names, and their jurisdictions (from 36-dongs to 32-dongs).
Sep. 1, 1977 Municipal Order No. 1181 (proclaimed on Aug. 26, 1977) created six new-dongs of Dapsimni 5; Myeonmok 6; Myeonmok 7; Sangbong 2; Jung-hwa 2; and Mang-u 2 (from 32-dongs to 38-dongs).
Oct. 10, 1978 Municipal Order No. 1287 (proclaimed on Oct. 10, 1978) transferred parts of Jang-an-dong, Beon-dong, and Yongdu 2-dong to Sinseol-dong (38-dongs to 39-dongs).
Oct. 1, 1979 Municipal Ordinance No. 1362 (proclaimed on Sep. 29, 1979) newly defined the names and areas of-dongs:
  • Part of Yongdu-dong transferred to Jegi-dong
  • Part of Hoegi-dong transferred to Hwigyeong-dong
  • Part of Hwigyeong-dong transferred to Hoegi-dong
  • Part of Sangbong-dong transferred to Mang-u-dong
Jul. 1, 1980 Municipal Ordinance No. 1413 (Mar. 31, 1980) installed-dong offices (from 39-dongs to 41-dongs):
  • Jegi-1-dong, -2-dong and -3-dong were integrated into Jegi-1 and Jegi-2;
  • Hwigyeong-dong divided into Hwigyeong-1 and Hwigyeong-2;
  • Muk-dong divided into Muk-1 and Muk-2
  • Mang-u-2-dong divided into Mang-u-2 and Mang-u-3
  • Part of Myeonmok-5-dong transferred to Hwigyeong-2-dong and Jang-an-1 and -2-dongs
Aug. 8, 1985 Municipal Ordinance No. 2015 (Aug. 8, 1985) installed new-dong offices (from 41-dongs to 43-dongs).
  • Jang-an-1 and -2-dongs divided into Jang-an-1, -2, -3, and -4.
Jan. 1, 1988 Municipal Ordinance No. 2251 (Dec. 31, 1987) newly defined the names and areas of-dongs.
  • Myeonmok, Jung-hwa, Sangbong, Mang-u, Sinnae, and Muk transferred to Jungnang Gu.
May 1, 1988 Amended Local Self-Government Law No. 4004 (proclaimed on Apr. 6, 1988) made Dongdaemun Gu a corporate self-governing area.
Jan. 1, 1989 The part in the west of Jungnangcheon in Jung-hwa-dong, Jungnang Gu, transferred back to Dongdaemun Gu under Executive Order No. 12557.
